Nutritional Medicine -Advanced Dip.& Degree articulation
Join Sydney's most experienced trainers in nutritional medicine. Established in 1973, courses in nutrition are offered from a certificate in nutrition studies to a government accredited Advanced Diploma in Nutritional Medicine. Study face to face or via distance learning. The focus is on training holistic nutritionists in practical & theoretical skills ranging from basic nutrition, food fundamentals to the application of advanced nutritional concepts within the training program.
You can study full time or part time in a flexible study format. On campus or via distance learning or a combination of both!
The course includes clinical training in the Nature Care Clinic under the supervision of a clinic supervisor treating clients.
Immediate professional membership into the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) provides health rebates for clients for participating major health funds.

This unit presented by Training Aid Australia deals with recognising and responding to an emergency in the workplace. Apply Basic First Aid (HLTFA1A) & Apply first aid (HLTFA301B) are compulsory in all our professional training programs. The course includes both a home study theory component and practical assessment. All participants are required to complete the theory component prior to attending this course. The theory component can be completed in one of two ways:
- Option 1: Online Training - Once enrolled a login and password will be sent via email for the online component to be completed prior to the training date.
- Option 2: Workbook and Manual - Once enrolled the participant receives their workbook and training manual to be completed prior to the training date.

In this stimulating module you will gain a solid understanding of the concepts of naturopathic nutrition. You will be introduced to the digestive system and energy balance measures. An overview of the macronutrients follows with a focus on carbohydrates their digestion, the glycaemic response and important food sources.

This module extends your knowledge of the macronutrients by concentrating on lipids/ fats and proteins and their importance in the diet with lessons on chemistry, digestion, metabolism and food sources of these essential dietary components.

This topical and interesting module discusses many important issues for nutrition and health including water, gastrointestinal ecology and fermented foods, food labeling and food additives, super-foods, sweeteners and salt, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine, vegetarian and popular diets. The module enables the student to evaluate dietary intakes and develop nutrition care plans.

The second year modules of Nutrition focus on the structure, function and clinical applications of micronutrients and associated nutrients. This module concentrates on the applications of water soluble vitamins including Vitamin B group, Vitamin C, bioflavonoids, Co-enzyme Q 10 and others. Accessory nutrients, glucosamine, probiotics and others, are also discussed.

This second year module continues the focus on micronutrients including the applications of fat soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids. The topical issues of ‘environmental hazards to health’ and heavy metals are addressed. The therapeutic applications of amino acids are also covered in detail.

The focus for this second year module is mineral application in health and disease states. Lessons cover chemistry, clinical application, dietary sources and dosage range of minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, selenium, trace minerals and many others.

Third year nutrition modules cover a systems approach to clinical treatment of illness, disease and maintenance of health and wellbeing. This module concentrates on developing clinical nutritional protocols for treating the conditions of the digestive system, integumentary system and respiratory system.

This third year module looks at the conditions associated with the endocrine system, female and male reproductive/ urinary systems, musculo-skeletal system, and metabolic system disorders. Conditions in focus include diabetes, menstrual disorders, autoimmune disease, osteoporosis and obesity amongst many others.

The focus for this third year module includes conditions of the cardiovascular system, neurological conditions, infectious disease and chronic disease management. Clinical nutritional and dietary protocols are developed for many conditions including cardiovascular disease, anaemia, affective disorders, migraine and cancer management.

- Nutrition Across the Lifespan 1A

This third year module expands on the systems approach to Nutritional medicine covered in Nutrition 3 modules and enables the student to develop an in-depth understanding of the changing nutritional requirements associated with specific age and life-stage health needs and conditions. Starting with preconception care this module takes a comprehensive look at nutrition during pregnancy and lactation. Nutritional management of common problems and conditions of pregnancy, the breastfed baby and nursing mother are addressed.

This third year module continues to look at nutritional requirements associated with age and life-stage development through infancy, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children and adolescents. Common nutritional problems in these age groups are discussed.

This third year module covers the physical changes of adulthood and the implications for adult nutrition including risk factors, prevention, conditions and intervention with a dietary focus on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer management. Further issues covered extend from the biological aspects of ageing and nutritionally related problems seen in older people to nutritional management of geriatric patients.

Pharmacology familiarizes the student with pharmacological terminology, introduces the classification of commonly used drugs according to their pharmacological actions and investigates drug side effects and interactions.

- Physical Examination & Integrated Pathology

This module is designed to expose students to a wide range of tests that are currently being used in Wholistic Practice - techniques which from an integral part of the modern Naturopathic Clinic. Current pathology skills are also discussed. Students will learn physical examination techniques for the digestive and respiratory systems, cardiovascular and nervous systems.

This workshop incorporates two topics: Infection Control in Alternative Health Clinics and Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS).

Wet Labs provide a practical course component for 2nd year students of Anatomy and Physiology. Students observe actual specimens of the human body, in a laboratory enviroment, to further enhance their theorectical knowledge. Students need to attend both Wet Labs 1 and 2 held at the University of Sydney, Cumberland Campus. Each Wet Lab will examine different body systems. Wet Lab one examines bones, joints, the muscular system, the nervous system and the endocrine system. (Wet Lab 2 is available in Term 3).
